Lesson from the events

From this history of Tok Janggut, as a Malaysian, we know how to value someone’s sacrifice moreover one of the warriors that defend our country from the dictator. So, one of the moral value is we must fight for our right and dare to voice out when someone try to attempt or abuse our fundamentals rights. Besides, we need to make a team building and put trust each other as is an important things when to resist the enemy. And last, the important things is we need to sacrifice from all aspect include our life, wealth and family. We must fight even though we know we are near to death.

Resistance Events

Encik Latiff who was a District Officer of Pasir Putih got the news that Tok Janggut and his followers were at Kampung Jeram had sent Sarjan Che Wan and several police officers to arrest Tok Janggut on accusation as not pay the tax. Sarjan Che Wan had been stab by Tok Janggut in a struggle meanwhile the others police officers were able to save their selves and make a report to Encik latiff.

Tok Janggut with Engku Besar Jeram, Penghulu Adam and Che Ishak Merbol had launched attack of 3 angles towards Pasir Putih and stay there for three days. They had burn up the government’s office, take over the police station and release the prisoner. After that, they establish the temporary government at Pasir Putih. Engku Besar had been appointing as a King of Jeram meanwhile Tok Janggut as a Prime Minister.

British Army attack Tok Janggut’s bunker at Kampung Pupuh and in this battle, Tok Janggut was lost and killed. Tok Janggut’s body was brought to Kota Bharu in a cart pulled by a cow which took a day. His body was hung for a few days in front of the royal palace in Pasir Bank (Padang Merdeka) before it was finally buried in Pasir Pekan

Factors of Resistance


Sultan Muhammad IV
In district of Jeram, British had intervened in administration by advising Sultan Muhammad IV to build a post at Pasir Putih. British also appoint a District Officer to administer Pasir Putih and this situation make Engku Besar Jeram, Tun Ahmad lost his power, authority and privileges. Because of this, Engku Besar Jeram was unsatisfied and initiated his follower, Tok Janggut to resist and dispel British from Pasir Putih. Tok Janggut actually kept his revenge deep in his heart on British because of his father, Panglima Munas and his brother, Mat Tahir had been killed on Sultan’s decree.

According this, Bristish announce the new tax system that burden more to the local residents. According to the new rules, all the local residents must pay the land tax but if they failed to do that, they will be fined. They were unsatisfied because hard to pay the tax according the office was far away and also had a certain time to pay it. Tok Janggut also went to district office many times but he failed to pay the tax according to the bad officer’s behavior. The officers were not efficient in doing job and like to insult the local residents. Then, Engku Besar asked Tok janggut to hold a campaign for all the residents in Jeram to not pay the tax. In this campaign, Tok janggut got a help and cooperation from Penghulu Adam, Haji Said and Che Ishak Merbol.

The external influences like First World War and the Mutiny in Singapore in 1915 persuade Kelantanese to launch and evoke towards British Administration. They believe British will be defeated in the First World War and the Mutiny. On addition, Kelantanese got news that Indian’s Army won this war and killed the Europeans. This achievement gave a big effect and made Kelantanese not respect at all to the Europeans.

British in Kelantan before 1909

When something had happened, there was a reason behind that. So, before we go through what the action that Tok Janggut take to resist, we need to know about what British had done before 1909. For the first is Declaration of Inggeris-Siam 1902This declaration put Kelantan under Siam. Through this, British take advantage by appoint one them to be an advisor for Sultan Muhamad IV in all things except in custom and religion. When British appoint an English advisor as ‘Penasihat dan Pesuruhjaya Siam’, Malayan people confess their unsatisfied according to the new rules in administration that British introduce.

Tok Janggut's profile

One of the Malaysia warriors during British protectorate before Japan protectorate is Tok Janggut. Tok Janggut or his real name is Haji Mat Hassan bin Munas was born on 1853 in Kampung Jeram, Pasir Puteh, Kelantan. But, he was stay at Kampung Nering, Kelantan.

Haji Mat Hassan bin Munas was known as ‘Tok Janggut’ because he keeps his beard down to the chest.  In addition, Tok Janggut was good in religion as he got the education from ‘pondok’ at Kelantan and also at Mecca. Besides, he was also good in martial art which is ‘Silat’.  Other than that, he works as farmer and trader.
